Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao was on Monday sworn in as the chief minister of newly-carved state of Telangana by governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. Eleven others were also sworn in as cabinet ministers by Narasimhan.
The cabinet includes Rao's son KT Rama Rao and nephew T Harish Rao.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the formation of Telangana and promised complete central support to help take the state to newer heights of progress. He congratulated Rao on becoming the first CM of the 29th state and expressed best wishes to its people. "India gets a new state! We welcome Telangana as our 29th state. Telangana will add strength to our development journey in the coming years," he tweeted. "My best wishes to people for the state's development journey," the Prime Minister said.
Rao will now head to the Parade Grounds for more inaugural celebrations. He is likely to assume office at 1pm which will be followed by the state's first cabinet meeting. KCR will reportedly expand his cabinet towards the end of the month.
The TRS government is expected to announce lifting the police cases filed against Telangana supporters during the separate statehood agitation and announce benefits for the families of those who reportedly died in support of the separate statehood demand, among the major decisions to be taken soon after assuming office.
Telangana came into existence as the 29th state of India, capping the decades-old struggle in the region for carving out a separate state from Andhra Pradesh. Rao's TRS won 63 of the 119 assembly seats in Telangana in the recent elections while Naidu's TDP, along with ally BJP, bagged 106 of the 175 assembly seats in Seemandhra.
According to TRS sources, cultural programmes would be organised on Monday night and a dazzling display of fireworks would be held from mid-night at People's Plaza and Tank Bund at the picturesque Hussain Sagar lake to celebrate the occasion.
The 29th state of India, Telangana, has got its new unique logo. Like the fabled Ganga Jamuna Tezeeb (composite culture), the official logo is a cultural mix of iconic Kakatiya Kala Thoranam of Kakatiya Dynasty and the world famous, over 400-years-old Charminar of Hyderabad, in addition to Ashoka emblem. Noted Telangana artist Laxman Aelay designed the logo for the Telangana government in about four days’ time. The logo has Ashoka symbol in gold at the top with Kakatiya arch and Charminar in the background.
The new logo will appear on the government invitations for the swearing-in ceremony of Mr Rao as Chief Minister and other functions on June 2.
